My practice is one of the few in the state of Washington with the ability to OBJECTIVELY diagnose and modify treatment of ADHD and comorbid conditions utilizing state of the art, cutting edge technologies developed at Harvard University's MacLean Hospital by Dr. Martin Teicher.
There are no longer any scientific doubts that AD/HD is real and that it is neurological/biochemical in origin and is NOT a behavioral disorder or an excuse for failure.
It is a disorder that requires that every aspect of the person's life be explored because AD/HD affects ALL aspects of life and is almost always associated with other disorders.
I believe that most current thinking about AD/HD is outdated and inadequate.
I believe in the work done by Dr. Daniel Amen and others who have found, through the use of functional brain imaging, that there may be more subtypes of AD/HD than are recognized in the current DSM-IV (the psychiatric diagnostic bible).
Treatment requires first and foremost a COMPLETE diagnosis of all comorbid conditions;
the use of medications in proper sequencing; diet; exercise; psychological counseling; school and workplace accommodations; peer interaction and social skills training; coaching for organization.
Because of the complexities, this is NOT a disorder that can, or should, be diagnosed in a busy family or pediatric practice.
It requires extensive history taking, a lot of time, and knowing the subtleties of the disorder. Sometimes a little treatment is worse than none at all.
